During September / October 2024 I had a serious medical challenge.
During my almost 5 week journey as a patient in Marseille and Eyguieres, I came away with valuable lessons that
hold true not only for navigating health challenges but also for leadership and
life in general:
- Invest
in Understanding: Take the time to thoroughly understand the issue at hand—what’s at
stake, the procedures, and protocols involved.
- Become
a Better Listener and Questioner: Practice asking open-ended and follow-up questions.
This skill not only clarifies information but also fosters meaningful
dialogue.
- Show
Genuine Empathy and Interest: Demonstrate empathy and sincere interest toward those
you interact with—or, more accurately, those supporting you. Building this
connection helps establish trust with medical staff and support teams.
- Stay
Focused on the End Goal: Don’t allow setbacks, disappointments, or unexpected
changes to derail you. Keeping a clear vision of the ultimate objective
helps maintain direction.
- Seek
Daily Positivity:
Each day, try to find something positive, no matter how small, and record
it in a journal. This reinforces resilience and perspective.
- Prioritize Fitness: Stay as physically and mentally fit as possible. This foundation supports recovery and mental clarity through challenging times.
In the end, these lessons mirror principles that serve anyone
well, whether as a patient or simply in daily life. They are grounded in common
sense and can be applied widely in virtually every sector—in business,
nonprofits, good governance, and beyond.
